BIO
- Santiago Lozano |
Born in Bogota, Colombia, Painter and Sculptor Santiago Lozano centers his work around the themes of imperfection and collapse. Whether exploring these topics through damage in otherwise perfect geometries, capturing the ephemeral moment of collapse in rigid materials and structures, or highlighting and creating compositions around the “error” in an artwork, his is a search for flaws, quirks, foibles. All those things that make us truly human.
Since 2004, after living in South America, New York, Europe and Africa, he focused on artistic production heavily influenced and supported by new pictorial and sculptural media. He has shown his work in diverse solo and collective shows in Spain, Mexico, Japan and Colombia. His work has been reviewed in various Colombian and Latin American art publications.
Artist Statement:
"Western culture assigns huge value upon perfection. Whether of form or function, perfection is something to be highly desired and esteemed. While that eternal search for perfection seems laudable to me, I find it utopic, and impractical in the face of contemporary society and values. Actually, it is the small flaws, the individual quirks and the endeavor of falling down only to pick oneself up and carry on, that makes us truly human. I have focused my work upon searching out all of those things; placing them center stage in my work, and giving them that added value that ennoble them as works of art.
In that search, no single technique, practice or material is encompassing. I am constantly searching for ways to capture the flaw, the imperfection, the collapsing moment. My works across all media become a record of that quest."
Santiago Lozano
ABOUT LOZANO's DRAWINGS SERIES:
"This series is based on my toddler’s drawings. I
have become fascinated with the simplicity of the
neo-expressionist line and the possibility of
conveying so much with so little. It allows me a
freedom of movement and a spontaneity that has
been lacking in my work for some time. It also
allows for a more subconscious style, one in which
the “error” and apparent clumsiness of the drawing
is itself the subject, the expression and the focus,
thus continuing my ongoing exploration of the
aesthetics of imperfection.
Santiago Lozano
